The are four main festivals which make up Chitral and Kalash festivals. To the people of Kalash tribe and the residents of Chitral these festivals are the culminations of religious life and these festivals they unite the people of that area. The spring festival which is locally known as “Joshi /Chilimjusht” takes place in the middle of May and lasts for four days. The spring festival celebrates the boon of the fairies on their lives and also provides mystical safeguards the goats and shepherds before they go to the pastures. Every religious festival like “Joshi Chilimjusht” is accompanied by dancing and rhythmical chant to a beat of the drum. The women wearing deck themselves up in their best traditional black robes, ornate cowries shelled head dresses and adorn themselves with colored necklaces. The tribal chiefs in colorful dresses hark back to of bygone days and events.
Uchal festival, in Augusts marks the jubilant occasion of the harvest of wheat and barley and bringing down of cheese from the high summer pastures. It is celebrated in the areas of Rumbur and Bumboret. This Ucal festival forms a quintessential part of Chitral and Kalash Festival. If we are talking about the colorful Chitral and Kalash Festival we can afford not to make even a passing mention of the Phoo festival which is only held in Birir area around end of September to celebrate the grape and walnut harvest. Last but not the least the Chomos festival is a quintessential part of all Kalash and Chitral festivals. As winter begins around mid December the Chomos festival starts. The festival is observed for the divine, the living and dead relatives, for the crops and the goats to be safeguarded, while the community, the village and the valley are purified prior to the impending New Year.
